RECAP:  Backwoodz Oddities is one of the more cleverly built attractions in the Ohio Valley!  The attraction is entered through the façade of an oversized clown’s mouth with the first stop being at "Lolly's" candy shop, where she encourages progression through an upright freezer taunting that, “Frost bite” is in our near future!  Next up, a bloody kitchen is home to a demented cook that’s anxious to turn guests into her dinner, then it’s onto a gathering of caged creatures, and a visit with an eerie palm reader that witnesses the planchette (curser) of a Ouija board moving about on its own!  From there, it’s onto a padded Asylum that finds an imprisoned loony talking to a severed head, and armed with a giant mallet he calls “Merle.”  Flickering lights signal the surprise of the night, resulting in a brief, unexpected entrapment before releasing into The Last Carnival’s arcade highlighted by a crane game filled with dolls, but all its claw can grab and pick up is a decapitated head!

Other scenes include a torture chamber displaying a human carcass oozing and dripping bodily fluids into a blood-filled sink where the only way is out is through a hidden passage; a conflict with a humongous fiend shooting off sparks; and a foggy, wooden skid maze that dumps into a pick-a-door chainsaw captivation!  With all the options labeled #2, finding the correct path leads into the clutches of horn-honking clowns, then departs into another multiple door #2 confinement surrounding an enormous spinning floor!  Eventually locating an unlocked route takes the course across an uneven, tilting bridge, and into a circus of fun and games (Jack's House), most notably "High Striker," where competitors can lend a helping hand, or in this case a head in a test of strength to help the clowns ring the bell.  Split building blocks provide a previously unseen escape that soon brings about a third door #2 chainsaw entanglement!  This time, discovery of the proper gate hatches through spider-infested woods into the presence of The Devil himself!  Welcoming sinners to Hell, he blasts flames of fire skyward, then points the way into a red, laser-lit “Smoker.”  Smoldering subsides as elusion of The Prince of Darkness heads back into the forest stumbling on the campsite of cannibalistic hillbillies frying an over-done body on their outdoor rotisserie grill!  Advancing deeper in the woods unearths a large, not so "Lucky" white bunny that was Tased to death by his grumpy, uncaring owner!  Uneven terrain guides past an old shanty stalked by knife wielding "Michael Myers!”  Avoiding “The Boogeyman” lands the excursion in a confrontation with a villain warning, “You’re all going to Hell,” as he loudly revs a motor that’s been stripped from an adjacent car!  More door #2s, dark mazes, dead ends and multiple chainsaw ambushes must be navigated before escaping Backwoodz Oddities, The Last Carnival Haunted House

Hell Night:  The addition of some vulgar language and adult toys to the experience, along with a few costume changes and mild touching transforms the attraction into their more adult-oriented "Hell Night!"  Best scenes were loony getting a little oral gratification from a severed head and motorhead monster splattering gasoline (water) on passersby and promising to, “Light them up!”

Other changes included a half-naked male clown in Jack's House, the Devil making you get down on your knees and praise him, the hillbillies pulling hair and wanting to cook you up for a late night snack, and Lucky the bunny rabbit back from the grave Tasing trespassers in the woods who come a little too close to his hutch.  Hell Night stats:  20 Minutes/32 Actors.

ANALYSIS:  Backwoodz Oddities is annually one of the more entertaining haunts around with multiple pick-a-door entrapments containing dead ends, loops, chainsaws, and plenty of door #2's!  Asylum provides another top scare.  Course is admired for its ingenious design, which includes the use of secret passages like the building blocks, freezer, etc., in addition to the previously mentioned entrapments.  Unique, award winning spinning floor is another favorite!  Fire and flames are visually impressive contributors to Hell.

Best actors of the night are Asylum loony, chainsaw fiends, and motor man.  Clowns in Jacks House are also memorable, one of which was on stilts, and hillbillies follow you through their scene.  Chainsaw assailants make sure to send guests through the wrong door #2s at first, thus providing some of the best scares the attraction has to offer.  Devil Priest, long-armed stilt monster, and other queue line characters do a good job working the crowd.

Dialogue isn’t as strong as in years past, which hurts the score.  Devil scene needs to be more intimidating and threatening.  Psychic room would benefit from some sort of action, and green laser tunnel is missed.  They should raise the bar on Hell Night by ramping up intensity, using more promiscuous costuming, and having some seductive scares, thus making it more extreme and worth the extra money.

Cost of admission is only $15 making this one of the best bargains in the entire Ohio Valley! region, and group size is kept to a maximum of 5 so everyone gets to enjoy the best show possible!  A more adult themed "Hell Night" is annually presented after midnight one Saturday during the season for $10 more.  The attraction's primary beneficiary is Southern Ohio Survivors, but they also donate to other local charities including animal shelters, schools, food banks, and a summer league baseball team.  OVH recommends lending your support by paying them a visit!  You'll be glad you did!
