RECAP: Located on a real 1830's haunted farm near a real Indian archaeological site, the Highway 50 haunted trail and woods begins upon entering into an old cabin occupied by Matilda - a well-versed, local historian of sorts, who tells the story about Indian attacks that once took place upon the residence, and how previous families would secretly access an upstairs attic to hide in order to avoid the ambush-like raids. She also passes on information pertaining to a curse once placed upon the land stemming from a deal with the dark side in response to corn no longer being planted in the fields.
Full of spirits of evil creatures past and present, the journey official gets underway down a torch-lit path, past skeletonized remains of horses still attached to abandoned carriages they once pulled, and where a caged girl is discovered pleading for help against the attack of a wretched demon from Hell! Ghilley monsters, werewolves, and other hidden surprises make their presence known as navigation winds its way through a wooden maze that finds hands clawing out at passersby, and a discontented ghoul ordering intruders to, "Get out!" Skeleton archways point the way beyond jail cells and a murderous gallows, where a hanging is underway, an electrocution has taken place, a shackled captive is restrained, and a razor-sharp guillotine has recently concluded a lethal decapitation, as blood still gushes from a severed artery in the neck, where the poor victim's chopped-off head used to be attached!
An arched gateway, complete with a moving skeleton animatronic welcomes visitors into a fog-filled cemetery that's adorned with tombstones and upright caskets. Hungry, inhabiting zombies stumble onto the scene, as water flows freely from an adjacent trough, and the course cautiously makes its way across a "bouncy" bridge and beyond skeletal remains suspended from vertical crosses! Body vaults shake, rattle, and vibrate of their own volition inside a nearby mausoleum, before the excursion heads deeper into the woods inspiring conflicts with legendary slashers Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees! Elusion dumps the adventure into the midst of a carnival-like circus area, featuring a mechanical, pop-up clown surprise in tandem with a few laughing jesters in advance of a Leatherface chainsaw, chase-out of Highway 50 Fright Field.
ANALYSIS: The story about the Indian attacks in the early 1800's perfectly sets the stage for a fun, spooky walk through the trail and woods. Actors were well-hidden throughout, and energetic in their roles! Trail itself is very well built and designed, and scenes flow together smoothly without anything seeming out of place. Lighting is mysterious, soundtrack is okay, and start and finish are strong. Construction of some additional structures, and a few more visually impressive props would elevate the score. Might be nice to incorporate a run-in or two with some villainous Indians given the legend, thus ramping up additional scares.
Operation Termination Zombie Paintball Gallery and The Corn Cob Cannon are also available, and accessible as part of combo ticketing along with the trail. This was OVH's first visit to Highway 50 Fright Field and we'll definitely be back! While there, be sure to visit the "Buckeye Trading Post" - part museum; part unique shop, and enjoy checking out a variety of Halloween masks, gifts, antiques, oddities, statuary, and Indian artifacts, etc., and maybe pick up some unusual souvenirs before leaving!
