RECAP & ANALYSIS: No other haunt in the world comes close to comparing to Land of Illusion from a design and architectural standpoint. It is the absolute mecca of haunted attractions featuring 6 uniquely-themed, professional haunts jam-packed with top-notch props, impressive animatronics, professional sound, theatrical lighting, and a surplus of energetic, talented actors portraying a variety of characters. The Scream Park’s 29th season provides a multitude of enjoyable scares starting off with several roaming performers entertaining crowds throughout the facility. “Lights Out” debuts in 2025 complimenting Dr. Psycho’s Haunted Estate, Temple of Terror, Killer Klowns, and Phobia in support of the infamous, award-winning Middletown Haunted Trail.
MIDDLETOWN HAUNTED TRAIL is a lengthy gauntlet of fright that proves once and for all why it’s THE most award-winning outdoor haunt around! Suspended above water, access is gained via an eerie, sewer-like tunnel that utilizes an iron grating for footing. Deranged vagrants immediately pounce onto the scene screaming bloody murder, and ramming delapidated grocery carts in the direction of unsuspecting navigators. The woods open into Area 49, a siren-blaring abyss where vibrating catwalks tremble as alien-like beings rise up from the depths alongside the adventure. Traversing the majestic enclosure dumps through mutant-infested toxic waste, then dives into a foggy forest, where the unmistakable theme from the movie Halloween signals the stalking arrival of notorious slasher Michael Myers! A close encounter or two, and a few “stabbings” later, the route departs into a tragic detention compound occupied by frantic, imprisoned captives that's operated by sadistic goons performing inhumane “surgeries” and ripping cadavers wide-open atop blood-stained gurneys!
A spark-emitting “slider” escalates the uphill escape, that guides advancement into a deadly coven of witches eagerly claiming souls, and setting the stage for a showdown with the Spider Queen and her arachnid entourage! Continuance up and over a towering scaffold bridge steers the way to a neighboring lumberjack and a violent triple chainsaw ambush that leaves nowhere to run other than into a crypt that discovers the presence of Reverend Mordecai Black, who's intimidating silhouette is first seen from a distance, standing in the arched doorway along the approach sending chills up and down your spine! His fiery sermon encourages followers in the congregation to rally and reclaim the world from false prophets like soul-taking Seymour, who promises to change your destiny if you agree to follow him instead of his arch rival, Rev Black!
The Headless Horseman haunts a spooky graveyard as the forest transitions into conflicts with a blowtorch waving fire-thrower, spiked walls that rapidly close in on both sides of the path, savage zombies, and a run-in with overgrown, dirty diaper-wearing baby Mikey mistaking others for his “dada,” and hungry for “milky-milky,” much to the dismay of his mama, Cecelia!
Upright buses that have been driven downward into the ground point the way to a cave-like entrance to Hell for a skirmish with the Devil himself! From there, the trail bends through a gruesome country kitchen where an unhinged pig farmer feeds jailed victims to her monstrous, snorting swine, then through a double spinning vortex highlighted by path-blocking clowns that mandate stooping or crawling your way through, and finally into a lengthy, fog-filled area dominated by more jesters, some persistently armed with “tasers” and they've got you in their sights! Still to come is one last chainsaw chase out that brings the curtain down on The Middletown Haunted Trail!
Standouts include chainsaw trio, flamethrower, witches, sadistic surgeons, lumberjack, Myers, pig farmer and her victim, attacking zombies, Mama Cecilia and Baby Mikey who are responsible for one of the funniest scares around, Seymour, and Reverend Mordecai Black who delivers an Actor of The Year performance!
With non-stop scares, creative theming, and persistent actors that never let up, the Middletown Haunted Trail cements itself as the best and most intense haunted trail anywhere in the country! Every actor here deserves an award! The action picked up early on prior to the underground segment and maintained its accelerated pace the rest of the way through! Would still like to see Hell ramped up by an amplified performance from Satan along with some energetic demons and possibly some “Hellcats,” but otherwise, a fantastic job!
DR. PSYCHO'S HAUNTED ESTATE is a sprawling, multi-layered exploration into madness, gore, and grotesque experimentation that gets underway through a darkened approach that funnels visitors through a twisting tunnel of hidden surprises before spilling into the "Oakley Greenhouse," where a deranged caretaker tends to horrific, half-plant/half-human experiments. From there, the chaos escalates inside the "Oakley Asylum," home to cackling lunatics bouncing off padded walls, some chained to their cell-like confinements, others gleefully inviting guests to join them—sometimes with threats of toe-removal!
Escape leads outside to an eerie cemetery, where caskets burst open to reveal headless cadavers! Flashing lights flicker from a crashed ambulance as the terror continues across an old, creaky bridge, where a pair of blood-soaked brothers go on the attack! “Red” gives chase from behind promising, “The Doctor’s gonna love you!” as the course stumbles into the house of Dr. Carver for an immediate confrontation at the hands of an evil, pig-faced villain.
Upstairs, the psychotic "Raven" guards the "Portal of Hell!" that leads back down to a waiting surprise from “Mongo,” and eventually into an incinerator room where deceased bodies are cremated and burned as the smell of decomposing flesh fills the air! A wicked embalmer lurks in the shadows armed with a chainsaw anxiously in search of another victim for the doctor! The adventure climaxes with a treacherous encounter with live worm-eating Dr. Psycho himself and his wife Luna Von Psycho holding onto a newborn and offering some recently conjured delicacies to very special guests! The dilemma concludes with a twisted, no-win decision — either choke down a slithering nightcrawler, or face the wrath of a frenzied, chainsaw-wielding, psycho-serum created madman! The choice is yours!
Dr. Psycho’s Haunted Estate delivers a nonstop barrage of insanity and interactive terror. Every scene is loaded with detail, corridors are packed with scares, and the entire cast is committed to pushing the madness to its limits. Standouts include Raven, Red, Dr. Psycho, and the Asylum girls. This isn’t just a haunted house—it’s pure, theatrical psychosis!
TEMPLE OF TERROR drops guests straight into a cinematic nightmare, blending Egyptian myth, ancient ruins, and classic haunted-house dread into one captivating experience.
The journey begins with a shaky elevator descent that plunges visitors deep into a dilapidated mine shaft, setting the tone for the rest of the action-packed experience. Stone-carved walls, flickering torchlight, and ominous chanting create an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere. The dark corridors are alive with monsters lurking around every corner, blocking the path and herding guests toward gruesome catacombs of decaying bodies. Skeletons and vampire remains line the walls—some springing to life with sudden terror.
A hidden underground stream leads to a swaying rope bridge that spans overgrown marshland delivering guests into a forest filled with ghillie surprises. A massive impaler looms in the shadows, as does a mummified behemoth seen tearing its victim limb from limb in gory fashion right before your eyes! Standout sequences involve a collapsing ceiling and a ceremonial ritual performed by a towering, jackal-headed Anubis, an Egyptian god of the underworld, intoning ominous warnings of, “You'll never get out of here alive!” A narrow, hidden claustrophobic tunnel that squeezes every ounce of adrenaline out of its intruders serves as the only escape from LOI's mysterious Temple.
Anubis, elevator attendant, ghillies, and snickering/snorting monster making finger noises are among the best performers. Soundtrack is a loud, intimidating, and impressive supplement throughout. Lighting is perfect! Use of water is appreciated and makes a vital contribution. Dialogue and interaction are outstanding from start to finish.
KILLER KLOWNS: The circus is back in town, and this year’s rendition is more menacing than ever before, especially with the non-stop, villainous antics of Toodles and Doodles, who are seen sporting new, sinister attire! The onslaught begins immediately as deranged klowns swing oversized hammers, eager to play “Whack-a-Mole” with your head! A pair of spinning vortexes gives rise to more mischievous shenanigans. Colorful walls, remnants of the old 3-D design, conceal multiple ambushes in advance of an ominous cotton candy room that finds klowns taunting guests attempting to persuade them into eating the rotting fluff off the walls! Things go from bad to worse down a shrinking hallway, where a lifeless klown lies on the floor amid screams, “She ate the cotton candy!” Suddenly springing back to life, she lunges at terrified visitors while Toodles and Doodles laugh and continue their relentless torment!
From there, a fenced-in maze takes charge crawling with discontented klowns eager to strike from every direction! Skar, a red-haired maniac, revs a chainsaw above his head, his nose brutally chopped off from last season's chaos! Departure from the chain-link maze ushers in an even more surreal dream — another revisit from Toodles and Doodles lurking within a life-sized pinball machine threatening, “Welcome to your F*cking Nightmare!”
The finale doesn’t let up progressing beyond a bottomless pit, and into a face-to-face showdown with the unhinged “Jingles,” and utlimately a locked-in, entrapment capture with Toodles and Doodles that climaxes in a lethal battle with chainsaw-wielding Loko who unleashes a hell-bent sendoff through a previously barricaded door concluding 2025's installment of Killer Klowns.
Standouts are Toodles, Doodles, Loko, Jingles, and those involved in the “Whack-a-Mole” segment. Actually, the entire cast was phenomenal, any one of whom could be singled out for continuous interaction and keeping the energy cranked from start to finish.
PHOBIA: is designed to bring out your deepest fears and anxieties, and deliver a relentless assault on the senses. Guests encounter everything from a near-miss hit-and-run collision with a massive semi-truck, to electrical short circuits, swarms of spiders and snakes, extraterrestrial alien encounters, oppressive darkness, and even a sinister voodoo priest. Claustrophobia is tested with a brief entrapment, while shock walls, vibrating floors, and laser-lit “swamps” keep visitors off balance at every turn. Hidden foes wield Taser-like devices to deliver startling “zaps” out of the shadows, while additional scenes offer a fenced-in felon ensnaring passersby; a police blockade in pursuit of a dangerous suspect; and the bizarre chamber of Dr. Death’s Dentistry, where the twisted orthodontist is seen yanking out the teeth of a helpless “patient!“ As the saying goes, “what is seen can’t be unseen” at Phobia.
Dr. Death is the most notable performer. Scenes take advantage of personal neuroses by capitalizing on common inhibitions. Soundtrack is exceptional and adds to the unnerving effect of the overall experience. Uncertain, claustrophobic finish remains tremendous!
LIGHTS OUT: New for 2025, this pitch-black entanglement thrives on the feeling of vulnerability. Stripped of the ability to rely on your eyes, the experience taps into deep psychological fear rather than leaning on traditional jump scares or elaborate sets. Every step becomes an act of courage as you’re forced to feel your way forward through the lightless maze. No visually impressive props or high-tech effects are needed, just pure darkness, disorientation, pounding soundscapes, and perfectly timed surprises. The clever use of lasers, thunder, and lightning intensifies the tension, while an unexpected “rain shower“ makes the experience even more realistic as guests are exposed to a gentle, mist-like spray. Lights Out, proves that sometimes the scariest thing of all is what you can’t see
This newest addition to Land of Illusion consists of a new course layout built from the ground up as it replaces Toxic Hillbillies that previously occupied this space. Best features include the beginning surprise; an impressively loud and intimidating soundtrack; laser that's cleverly used to create the impression of a narrowing ceiling; and thunder, lightning, and accompanying rain shower, all of which are most memorable
OVERALL: Roaming members of the undead including Regan (The Exorcist) and other creatures begin the scares immediately upon entrance to Land of Illusion. The site is a modern marvel, boasting state-of=the-art professionalism at its finest with movie set designs Hollywood would be proud of, and an unmatched atmosphere. The place is an absolute mansion, with six full hours of non-stop Halloween fun complimented by nightly entertainment on the Stage of Rage, cozy fire pits, food from The Creepy Café, adult beverages and “spirits” served by friendly bartenders in The Voodoo Lounge for guests 21 years of age and older, and The Ghostly Gift Shop offering a variety of souvenirs.
